This is A cassette tape.
We used them a lot years ago. More specifically, this is a mix tape. One made for me in 1988 by Christine Coomer. It contains some classic mix-tape material; 7 seconds, Billy Bragg, Michelle Shocked, some Cure B-sides, the Specials, The Clash.. anyways, a great mix-tape.
Well, it needed repair. And unlike a mixed-cd, you can actually repair this technology.
Step 1. place cassette onto desk.
Step 2. unscrew 5 screws, place carefully aside
Step 3. gingerly seperate the two cassette body-halves
Step 4. fix what needs fixing
Step 5. put back together
Then you toss it back into the cassette deck and crank it loud.
Aaahhhh.. old technology. Got to love it.

If you ever decide to update - I have a good tape deck and hardware/software to rip old tapes into .wav and subsequently, into MP3. It takes a while, but for good stuff, it can be worth it.
If it's available, obviously itunes is easier.
