I want your comments:
In your opinion, what album has the best opening track?
RULES:
-albums must be good overall. No suckage allowed. Like in the 80-95% good range.
-Albums must be of the modern, pop-music era. Of course there are some classics from the classics, but lets make it... 1975 till now... (cause there are some great Clash options)
-I get to be the Judge... If your album sucks, I will let you know (its my blog)..
Here is my all-time favorite album with a killer opening track:
Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet. "Contract On The World Love Jam" is an amazing way to start an album, then it rips into "Brothers Gonna Work It Out", then chills with "911's a Joke"
Wilco's Being There is also good, "Misunderstood" is a nice beginning. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, again, Wilco, is great for starting with "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"... And of course Tom Waits has some great beginnings, I even have a Pogues album that starts with a great jam....but you can't beat Fear of A Black Planet... too good.

Maybe a little too pop, I know, but I always liked the way Oasis's What's the Story starts up with "Hello". Nice fade in.
Nothing else really has ever jumped out at me as a good start like that one.
Off the top of my head, I'll say Jane's Addiction, Nothing's Shocking. That bass line and intro on "Up the Beach" is epic. Sets up the rest of the disc, which I think qualifies as 100% quality, despite how much anyone associated with that band has sucked since then.
Can't top this:
Tom Sawyer on Rush in Rio
*FOUL*
Rush in Rio borders on suckage. Its going to the officals who are reviewing the play...
Now, I did my time with the trio, from Fly-by-Night to Hold Your Fire (I even saw them on that tour)...But..hold on, we're about to hear from the officals now:
Its GOOD. Appearantly my love for The Hold Steady allows for classic hard rock into this list.
Ok, you're good. But be careful next time.
Up the Beach does count. good call.
