ok, barely slept an hour on saturday due a nasty-SOB of a cold. Woke up late and sick...
But after a morning running around, bringing the kids here and there, I felt like I could race the cold into submission.
I thought I was running late but arrived at Boom Island to find myself very early. So I helped the guys set up the course and got my entry fee waived.
jump to the race....
new-ish course involved a off-camber turn which right from the start caused a crash, sending many of us to the back. I was racing next to alan-dude and with us was a kid on a mtn bike. This kid couldnt hold a line and was all over turns. At one point (first lap) he veered wide and sent Alan-dude into my path, sending me straight into a light pole. Jam the brakes and SMACK hit the pole with the shoulder. I stay upright and unclip. Start rolling again only to find in the fast U-turns that I have no front brakes and very little back ones. Around the big U, the back tire washes out and sends me to the ground. So, two crashes, first lap. But I'm ok. So I re-mount and hit the pedals.
I spend the rest of the race jamming when I can-slowing when I need to.
I end up 26th out of 60-something riders. Not great-I thought I was better than that.
Regarless, fitness has arrived and next race with working brakes, I should be able to do better.
Still cant mount at speed. I spend time on Saturday just going back and forth in the park and felt pretty good about jumping on the bike. The minute I do it in a race, at speed-the ol' double-step comes back.
but I like this Cross-thing.... I've been biten by the cross-bug.
And I think the cold has gone away.
